Pikes Peak, Cascade-Chipita Park, Colorado, March 13, 2020
LIMITED RUN, Only 20 prints.
I shot this image of the mountains east of Pikes Peak while descending, after a failed summit attempt. I had come within a few hundred feet of the peak but had turned around after my hands had gotten too cold and painful. This view on the way down is a reminder that despite a tough mental battle, there is beauty and mystery in it.
At the time, I was listening to Ed Viesturs’ No Shortcuts to the Top, chronicling his journey to summit the 14 peaks over 8,000 meters. He says, “the only competition is with yourself.” This came to mean much more after this summit bid and when folks ask me why I do this. My reason is it’s a rare opportunity to come to the very edge of our personal limits.
