One of my favorite movies of all time, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. A remake of the 1947 film, this version sees Ben Stiller’s Walter Mitty, “escape the tedium of his monotonous, anonymous life, and inhabits a world of exciting daydreams filled with heroism, romance, and action.”
This movie resonated with me on so many levels – the need to be adventurous, to stand up for something, to break out of the routine. Plus the humor, special effects, and music were all on point.
I watched Crawl the other day knowing that the movie had earned some great RT scores (83% critics, 75% users), despite having the plot of a B- giant killer animal movie. Starring Kaya Scodelario (Pirates, Maze Runner, and Moon) and Barry Pepper, it’s the classic tale of father daughter caught in the basement with… giant Florida alligators. What throws this plot over the top is it takes place during a hurricane and that Kaya’s character is a college swimmer who’s struggled with getting past her insecurity. Can Kaya get past her insecurities to swim faster than the alligators to get help?! So ridiculous that it’s so good. Action scenes are tense and well-crafted, and you can’t help but enjoy several “Florida Man” deaths.
It Follows, a scary movie from 2014, is about how a supernatural force follows a young woman after having sex with someone. Little did she know that this creepy, slo-mo supernatural shapeshifter follows you until it kills you, and then works its way back up the history of sex partners. Therefore, the only way to get it from following you is to have sex with someone and pass it on to some poor sucka. I’m sure it’s an analogy for something, but the concept alone is enough to watch this movie. The solution is also quite interesting.
