I love, love, love simple t-shirts. They’re universal and great for traveling, since you don’t want to stand out too much. And at home and out-and-about, appropriate for any age.
I’m 40 and in the middle of redefining my style, which might very well take me into the rest of my life, so I need to get this right!
So, below is a rundown of t-shirts I’ve tried, pro and cons. If you try any (yourself or as a gift), write me and let me know what you think!
Buck Mason

Proclaimed as the definitive t-shirt that don’t break the bank, these are my go-to t’s to be stylish while out. My goal is to look clean and effortless, but with a touch of something… stylish. I learned about them from consistently being on GQ’s recommended list of shirts and decided to give them a try. They don’t disappoint.
Pro – Clean styling, durable, iconic, and love that curved hem.
Con – A tad pricey for a t-shirt, and I’ve found their cuts are not entirely consistent. Good news is their customer service is pretty good and free returns.
Uniqlo

Decided to give them a try recently, primarily cause I was in an experimental mood and have always been interested in this Japanese company, that’s been around since 1949 apparently.
Pro – Cheap! Got 2 t’s for $10 each, they feel really good and fit very nicely. Washed a few times now and still look like new. To be honest, if I didn’t know the price, I would’ve thought these were way pricier. Color choices are interesting without being too weird.
Con – Extremely simple and basic, so perhaps best for around the house, and quick errands.
United By Blue

I’ve found these t’s to be a bit of a conundrum. Bought several years ago and they still fit and look great. So I bought another one recently and it seems like they’ve changed the fabric, which has resulted in a much richer, higher quality feel, but also a heavier fabric in weight. Leads me to think, these shirts will be fantastic for adventure travel, that’ll hold up in rugged environments and hand washing, and still look fresh.
Pro – Love their business model of helping to clean up the ocean with every purchase, and the shirts have lasted the test of time.
Con – Again, pretty basic fare so you won’t be getting second-looks as you walk around.
